Setting Up Your Web Site
Please note: The school does not provide web site development for individuals, so each person is responsible for developing their own web site.
If you are not comfortable developing your own web site, please consider creating a site using OIT's sites.uci.edu WordPress service.
Overview
- Personal website URL:
https://www.socsci.uci.edu/~username- You can also use your department website's domain name instead of socsci
- Upload files to your site via SFTP on the server
nexus.ss.uci.edu - Website files go in the folder:
public_html
Your Network Account
All Social Sciences faculty, staff and grad students are eligible for accounts on the school's network domain, called an SS2K account. This provides you with login to your office Windows computer and other network resources, including a public_html folder on the school's file server that you can use to create a personal web page.
To setup this folder for web page use or to request a new account, please email Social Sciences Computing Services at sscs@uci.edu.
Accessing Your Network Home Directory and public_html Folder
The best way to access your network home directory is to use SFTP. There are many programs you can use to accomplish this, but here are some common ones:
- On Windows: WinSCP (free)
When you have installed and opened your SFTP software, use these settings to setup a connection to our server:

| Password | your SS2K password, not the same as your UCInetID2) |
You do not need to provide a remote directory path or an initial starting directory. When you login, you will automatically be connected to your home directory.
Inside Your Web Folder
If your account is set up to display web pages, you will see a public_html folder. If your account has not been setup for website hosting, so you should contact SSCS to request this.
- The “public_html” folder is where you place your web site files.
- Anything outside your public_html directory is private and only accessible by you.
You are responsible for creating and uploading all website files. We do not provide website development services.
Your URL
The format of the URL for your web site is: www.socsci.uci.edu/~username (for most users the username is usually your UCINetID).

Important Notes:
- SSCS provides only web site hosting services. We do not provide web site creation or maintenance services.
- Currently, web sites are served only by a Linux server, not a Microsoft IIS server
- Currently, only limited php and MySQL capabilities are available - we do not provide general web services
