This article assumes that a system administrator has already configured Google Authenticator for your use. The instructions below are limited to SSH connections to Ubuntu servers, future instructions may include other connection protocols.

Setup

  1. Download and install Google Authenticator to your smart phone. It is available via the Play and App stores
  2. Contact SocIT to schedule a Zoom call with a technician in order to generate your QR Code: socit@uci.edu
  3. Scan the QR code with your Google Authenticator app

Usage

  1. SSH to the server as per usual, type in your password when prompted
  2. A “Verification Code” prompt should appear, type in the 6 digit code that is generated in your Google Authenticator app.
    1. If you have multiple codes, note that the correct code should be labeled with the server and user
    2. The codes expire every 30 seconds. If you notice the countdown circle to the right of the code near the end, wait until it refreshes before typing it in
